What entry-level electric guitar should my friend get?

my friend (he has been a bassist for 5 years, prefers rhythm guitar) wants to get an electric guitar and learn to play stuff like AC/DC, metallica...basically the classic rock/metal stuff and he really seems to dislike fender guitars any suggestions about good affordable electric guitars for him?
